Entering a flow state, also known as being "in the zone," is a mental state where a person becomes fully immersed and deeply focused on an activity. It is a state of optimal performance and enjoyment.
So now we have established what flow state is.
Now we will share with you 10 ways you can reach flow state or if you will activate flow state.
1. Set clear goals:
Establish clear and specific goals for the activity you are about to engage in.
Having a clear direction helps you focus your attention and increases the likelihood of entering a flow state.
Say for instance when I started learning to backflip there was people watching me and walking around, cars beeping and so on but I told myself no I am here to learn the backflip. Now this helped me a lot
2. Eliminate Distractions:
Minimize external distractions as much as possible.
Now this could be putting your phone on silent, finding a quiet place, and cancelling any other distractions.
However the idea is that you are 100% focused on your task / activity without anything steering your mind.
3. Find the right challenge-skill balance:
You should engage in activities that not only match your skill level but also that will give you a challenge.
If the challenge is too low, you may get bored, and if it's too high, you may become overwhelmed. The optimal balance between skill and challenge promotes flow.
4. Practice Mindfulness:
Develop mindfulness techniques such as deep breathing, meditation, or visualization to enhance your ability to stay present and focused on the task.
Even just practicing mindfulness and meditation on a daily basis will help you and train you mind to stay focused.
When I had to commute to my job, a 20 minute buss ride I would practice meditation with no music.
I know it was always noisy on the bus but being able to focus with everything happening around you is truly beautiful.
5. Engage in activities you enjoy:
Choose activities that you genuinely enjoy and have a passion for. When you are passionate about something, it becomes easier to enter a flow state because you naturally invest more energy and attention into it.
However we all know that we can indeed trick our mind into thinking we really enjoy something to maximise flow state in every aspect of our lives.
This is one method to achieve GOD Flow.
6. Create a conductive environment:
Now what do I mean by this? well set up your areas of activity in a way that minimises the amount of time and thinking needed.
So for an example place your Work | School clothes on your chest of drawers so soon as you wake you grab them as your on the way to the shower, or if you work out at home set up your equipment before you leave for your quests then when you come back you can just get straight to it and being mindful of others as well if you live with someone make sure you don't leave it out in the middle of the floor for someone to go and hurt themselves
I find this really good practice in being efficient too.
7. Increase concentration through routine:
Now what I mean?
Establish a routine or ritual that signals to your mind and body that it's time to enter a focused state. It could be something as simple as listening to a particular song or performing a short warm-up exercise.
This helps me when I train parkour I stick on some NEFFEX on my mp3 player and start doing safety rolls and that usually activates flow state for me.
8. Get into the "Flow Zone" Gradually:
Start with smaller, manageable tasks related to the activity you want to engage in. As you progressively build momentum and achieve small successes, it becomes easier to enter a flow state for more extended periods.
Yes this does indeed work, however you have to keep retraining and refining.
Just like anything in life you want to be great at it all takes practice, practice and more practice.
9. Practice deep work:
Embrace deep work techniques, such as time blocking or the Pomodoro technique, which involve dedicated periods of uninterrupted focus. These methods can help eliminate distractions and create a conducive environment for flow.
Now when I started learning code I found that my flow window was 3 hours but it took me about 36 minutes to enter flow state, then I started to pop on some chill-step music and it took me 17 minutes to enter flow state while coding.
Test it yourself first with no music then try again with music.
10. Cultivate a growth mindset:
Adopt a growth mindset, where you view challenges and setbacks as opportunities for growth rather than obstacles.
I know this is easier said then done but..
Embracing a positive and open mindset can enhance your motivation and increase the likelihood of entering a flow state.
