โBreathe Easy: Navigating Hay Fever Season Like a Proโ ๐ผ๐คง

Are you sick and tired of dreading spring | summertime?
Do you dread the days that your neighbours cut their grass? or maybe your dreading cutting your grass now. Maybe you have a partner and he | she or they are probably like - Hey the grass needs cutting and you need to do it. To them we are probably just putting it off because we cannot be bothered but little do they know we are putting it off because we know what will happen next and that is the aftermath the dreaded hay fever, the bane of our lives and it is about to ruin our day.
Do you get frustrated when all of your friends have loads of fun doing amazing activities like nature walks, pool parties, running, going for a drink, clubbing and then some all summer round, meanwhile you are constantly suffering with blocked nose, runny nose, you feel dizzy and people think your crying because your eyes just wont stop watering, you get intense rashes if your skin comes into contact with grass or maybe you find it difficult to have a conversation with someone without having a sneezing fit.
Not to mention most of us likes having the window open at night but you can guarantee you will not get a good night sleep because you will most likely have a blocked nose all night, either that or you will have a constant runny nose.
Now this came to my attention the other day while I was just playing in the garden with my baby boy.
I was rolling around on the grass and pretending to be a baby, making silly noises and crawling on my knees and we was having so much fun until I had an intense burning sensation on my skin and i felt really itchy so I went in doors and look at myself in the mirror and I was covered in a rash and my skin had turned so red it almost looked like I was sunburnt however there was blotches of white and red also so I had to have a shower to calm my skin I put some cream on and it had stopped the itching and the burning sensation.
Then I thought I am a 30 year old man and I have always suffered with hay fever however I have never thought about how I can help others conquer hay fever.
So here I will not only give you tips and tricks to minimise your pollen allergies I will also list the products I use daily to get rid of hay fever and i hope that you too will be able to kick your hay fever to the curb.
- Protect Yourself from Pollen:
- Apply petroleum jelly (like Vaseline) around your nostrils to trap pollen.
- Wear wraparound sunglasses, a mask, or a wide-brimmed hat to prevent pollen from getting into your nose and eyes.
- Shower and change your clothes after being outside to wash off pollen.
- Taking hay fever tablets even on days that it is not sunny will help like say you have a packet of 20 hay fever tablets you must take 1 each day until the box is done.
- You can use nasal spray I recommend spraying once in the morning before you go out and once at nigh time before you go to sleep.
- Try a spoonful of honey or two.
While itโs a popular belief, thereโs no scientific evidence to support the idea that eating honey helps alleviate hay fever symptoms. Although some people anecdotally report a decrease in symptoms from consuming local honey, research remains inconclusive. Bees primarily collect flower-based pollen to make honey, which doesnโt cause hay fever. However, honey does have other health benefits due to its antimicrobial and antioxidant properties. For coughs and colds, manuka honey has been found to be particularly effective. Just keep in mind that honey is 70% sugar, so regular consumption may not be suitable for everyone.
- Keep windows and doors shut as much as possible and this may seem a challenge.
While itโs tempting to keep windows open at night, especially during warm weather, doing so can worsen hay fever symptoms. Hereโs why.
Pollen Infiltration: Sleeping with open windows allows pollen to enter your bedroom. This can exacerbate hay fever symptoms, especially if the pollen youโre allergic to is high.
Attached Pollen: Pollen might also cling to curtains or bed linen, further aggravating your symptoms.
To minimize hay fever discomfort, keep windows closed during the day, especially when pollen levels are elevated. This will help create a more allergen-free environment indoors.
There is was to keep cool during the night and that could be air conditioning however most of us do not have that luxury you can use fans, wash your face with cool water, you could also not sleep under the blanket.
There are many ways to keep cool when your hot but this is a post for hay fever so we shall just stick to this.
- Indoor Measures:
- Vacuum regularly and dust with a damp cloth.
- Use a pollen filter in your carโs air vents (if available) and a HEPA filter in your vacuum cleaner.
- Avoid keeping fresh flowers indoors.
- Minimize exposure to smoke, as it worsens symptoms.
- You can Use Allergen-Resistant Covers: Cover mattresses and pillows to prevent pollen from burrowing in.
- You can also Remove Shoes and Outerwear: Encourage family members to remove shoes and outerwear at the door to prevent pollen from spreading indoors.
- Place Doormats: Use doormats outside and inside to trap pollen particles.
- Make sure you are washing you curtains and bedding regularly.
- You could use a humidifier.
Humidifiers add moisture to the air, maintaining humidity levels between 30% and 50%. Theyโre beneficial for several reasons:
- Preventing Influenza: Higher humidity can deactivate flu virus particles, reducing the risk of infection.
- Productive Coughs: Moist airways make coughs more productive by releasing trapped phlegm.
- Reducing Snoring: Adequate moisture lubricates airways, potentially improving snoring.
- Skin and Hair Health: Combat dryness, cracked skin, and fragile hair, especially during winter.
Now pets. Yes, pets can indeed bring pollen indoors. Dogs and cats may carry pollen in their fur after being outside, especially if they roll in grass. To minimize this, consider bathing and brushing your pets regularly. Additionally, itโs a good idea to keep them out of your bedroom and off your bed to prevent transferring pollen onto bedding.
